In peak season some ships anchor offshore and bring passengers in by tender.

Back on board

All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before sailing; your ship's daily planner has the exact time. Buck Island trips mean a drive across the island each way, so leave a margin.

Be aware

  • Traffic drives on the left, which surprises many U.S. visitors. Take care crossing streets, and if you rent a car.
  • Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, the long beach south of Frederiksted, is usually open to the public only on weekends.

Scout's notes on St. Croix

Short port days

Frederiksted's waterfront, Fort Frederik and Frederiksted Beach are all walkable from the pier. Rainbow Beach is about 5 minutes away by taxi.

Long port days

Cross the island to Christiansted, a historic harbor town, and take a boat to Buck Island Reef National Monument and its marked underwater snorkel trail. Rum distillery tours are another popular stop.

Getting back on time

Christiansted is about 15 miles from the pier, and most Buck Island boats leave from that side, so allow for the drive both ways. Traffic drives on the left here.
