Scout's notes on La Romana

Short port days

Altos de Chavón, a stone village built to look like a 16th-century Mediterranean town, sits above the Chavón River by Casa de Campo. A taxi or short tour covers it, often with time at the Casa de Campo marina.

Long port days

Boat trips to Catalina Island for snorkeling, or the longer day to Saona Island's beaches by catamaran or speedboat, are the classic excursions. Saona boats usually leave from Bayahibe, east of La Romana.

Getting back on time

Saona days are long and depend on both boats and road transfers, so a tour with a return-to-ship guarantee is the safest choice. Use licensed taxis and agree the fare before you go.
