For scale: the fixed fare from the airport to Old San Juan and the piers is $21. Small extras may apply for bags, groups over 5 and late at night.

Money

US dollars. Cards are widely accepted.

Language

Spanish and English are both official; English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Back on board

All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before sailing; your ship's daily planner has the exact time. El Yunque rainforest is about an hour away by road each way.

Be aware

  • If your ship arrives in the afternoon, check closing times: the forts close in the late afternoon.

Scout's notes on San Juan

Short port days

Old San Juan is walkable from the pier: the El Morro and San Cristóbal forts, colorful streets, and restaurants. You need no tour at all to have a great stop.

Long port days

El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, is about an hour's drive away. Evening calls make bioluminescent bay kayak tours possible.

Getting back on time

Traffic leaving the city can be heavy in the late afternoon. For El Yunque, choose a tour that returns well before all-aboard.
